Sourland Mountain Preserve
The 4,000 acre Sourland Mountain Preserve is county owned and administered by the Somerset County Park Commission. There are 7 miles of trail here. What the area lacks in mileage, it makes up for in difficulty. The trails are rocky, technical, and fun.
Sourlands is also known for its nesting birds. Keep an eye out for Summer Tanager, Winter Wren, and Black-capped and Carolina Chickadees.
Washington Valley Park
Washington Valley features 9 miles of beginner to intermediate trails. The park is located in the Watchung Mountains at the geographic center of Somerset County. It consists of Pine and Hemlock forests, open freshwater wetland marshes, impressive rock outcroppings, numerous historic features and a 21-acre reservoir. See it in autumn for brilliant fall colors and Hawk Watch! The park is one of the East Coast’s premier locations to watch thousands of raptors migrate south every autumn.
